On July 7, 18:00 CET, MFG Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg presents the Pre Fixe with the Animation Lounge as part of the MFG Jour Fixe in cooperation with the Film- und Medienfestival gGmbH (organizer of Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film Stuttgart and Raumwelten) and the AMCRS.
Erwin Feyersinger will talk about “Representations between exaggeration and stereotyping in character design and animation”.
One of the outstanding possibilities of animation is to bring essential features of characters to the point through abstraction and exaggeration. With examples across the history of animation, the lecture shows how this exaggeration can have both positive and negative effects. On the one hand, the characters gain in clarity and complexity and often also in general validity. On the other hand, exaggeration can also lead to the perpetuation of stereotypical and derogatory clichés.
Erwin Feyersinger is an academic councillor at the Institute for Media Studies at the University of Tübingen and co-director of the Research Center for Animation and Emerging Media. He is co-spokesman of the AG Animation of the Gesellschaft für Medienwissenschaft (GfM). Among other publications, he published the monograph Metalepsis in Animation: Paradoxical Transgressions of Ontological Levels and co-edited several edited volumes on animation.
Information on the event location in Stuttgart will be announced soon.
The MFG Jour Fixe afterwards, starting at 19:00 CET, offers a unique opportunity for exchange and networking.
