Start-Up Monday at the Filmakademie in Ludwigsburg
The first Start-Up Monday in 2025 will be held on February 10, 2025, organized by the City of Ludwigsburg in collaboration with Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg‘s Animationsinstitut and the Kontaktstelle Frau und Beruf Ludwigsburg – Region Stuttgart. The event will take place at the Filmakademie, Filmgalerie, Akademiehof 10 in Ludwigsburg.

After a presentation and discussion of the “Ludwigsburg gründungsfreundlich” (Ludwigsburg Founding-Friendly) concept, the event moves into the Prompt Arena under the guidance and moderation of Florian Schweer.
Starting at 16:30 CET, institutions supporting startups will introduce themselves, providing an opportunity for direct exchange – with Baden-Württemberg International (BW_i) | Start-up BW | Senioren der Wirtschaft e.V. | MFG Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg mbH | IHK Region Stuttgart Bezirkskammer Ludwigsburg | bwcon und Accelerator M.Tech | Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH (WRS) | S-Wagnis der Kreissparkasse Ludwigsburg | Kokolores Collective.
At 18:00 CET, Ludwigsburg’s Mayor, Dr. Matthias Knecht, will officially open the evening program with a panel discussion featuring experts on the three key focus areas of Ludwigsburg’s startup strategy: creative industries, tech startups, and female founders. What are best practices? To what extent do these areas complement each other, or are they in competition? Which support programs are truly effective for the target audience? What are their needs and expectations?
Around 19:00 CET, it’s time to say, “Welcome to the Prompt Arena!” Prompting is a hot topic right now, as so-called prompts are used to give commands to AI. This interactive and entertaining format invites the audience to watch eight participants live as they use generative AI in the creative process. Here, you can experience prompting up close and see the results for yourself.
If you’d like to actively participate in the Prompt Arena, you can sign up with Max Höllen (m.hoellen@ludwigsburg.de) – teams are also welcome!

New Study: Baden-Württemberg Now Germany’s Leading Hub for Animation Film and VFX

Source: MFG Baden-Württemberg, January 24, 2025
A recent study by the research institute Goldmedia shows that Baden-Württemberg has risen to become Germany’s leading hub for animation films and digital feature film production in recent years. No other federal state in Germany is home to as many companies and professionals generating films and series entirely digitally. Many VFX companies based in Baden-Württemberg also collaborate on major Hollywood productions. Since 2010, the revenue of the local animation and VFX industry has grown by a remarkable 800 percent, reaching 170 million euros. According to the study, this development is largely attributed to the targeted support provided by Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (MFG).
MFG Managing Director Carl Bergengruen stated: “In 2014, we became the first federal state to introduce a highly effective funding instrument specifically tailored to the animation and visual effects sector, laying the foundation for the significant growth of this industry.” Currently, the revenue in the field of animation and visual effects in Baden-Württemberg is generated by 85 companies. In 2010, there were only around 30 such businesses.
In the field of digital games, the study also identified significant revenue growth of at least 90 percent since 2015, reaching 190 million euros in Baden-Württemberg. This revenue is generated by 146 companies. The substantial growth is partly due to a specialized funding program introduced by the MFG in 2020 for local games companies. This program supports innovative games projects from concept to production.
The study also highlights the industrial policy significance of the animation, VFX, and games sectors for Baden-Württemberg. Technological innovations from these fields are already being applied in a wide range of industries, from the automotive sector and mechanical engineering to healthcare. However, 48 percent of the orders in the VFX and animation industry come from the audiovisual media sector, including film and series productions for cinema, streaming, and television.
In the games market, a significant portion of orders – 45 percent – comes from the entertainment sector of audiovisual media. However, similar to the animation and VFX sectors, there is a growing trend in orders from other industries.
The study also underscores the importance of the 70 industry-relevant degree programs and the highly sought-after networking and advisory activities offered by the MFG in the fields of animation, VFX, and games. Examples include the “Animation Media Creators Region Stuttgart” (AMCRS) network.

Studio FILM BILDER’s “Lena’s Farm” on TV
The animated series “Lena’s Farm” by Elena Walf (Studio FILM BILDER) will be broadcast on KiKA, the children’s channel of ARD and ZDF, from February 4, 2025. In the new animated series for pre-school children, the animals on Lena’s farm experience all kinds of social challenges, which are told non-verbally in humorous stories. “Lena’s Farm” (ZDF) – an instructive example of understanding and tolerance – can be seen from February 4, 2025, Mondays to Fridays at 9:10 CET as well as on kikaninchen.de and in the KiKANiNCHEN app.

Author Elena Walf tells heart-warming stories about understanding and tolerance. Each episode revolves around a different problem between individuals and the group, with a different animal always taking center stage. These are interpersonal problems that are easy for children to understand thanks to the translation into the animal world. The series manages without any language at all. Elena Walf’s imagery is all the more expressive for that. It is as clearly and pointedly drawn as it is lovingly embellished in detail.
„Lena’s Farm“ is a production by Studio FILM BILDER GmbH, Producer ist Thomas Meyer-Hermann (more information and credits at Studio FILM BILDER). Editor in charge at ZDF is Ingo Weis.

THE LÄND Global Game Jam 2025
At the world’s largest event for game development, the Global Game Jam, up to 250 gaming enthusiasts from across Baden-Württemberg will come together at the invitation of MFG Baden-Württemberg at the end of January 2025. The “THE LÄND Global Game Jam” will take place from January 24 to 26, 2025, at Karlshochschule in Karlsruhe. During this 48-hour development and programming hackathon, game design students will collaborate with game studios, passionate developers will work alongside experienced and professional coders, and disciplines such as sound, design, psychology, and communication will also find their place.

After a successful debut in January 2024, the statewide THE LÄND site is once again introducing an exclusive offering: In two side tracks, participants can collaborate with exciting challenge providers to develop game ideas and build prototypes on specific topics. How can classical music, with all its emotions and tonal colors, serve as a foundation for the creative process of game development? This will be explored live in the “Classical Game Jam” hosted by SWR, featuring an ensemble from the SWR Symphony Orchestra. In “Blame the game, not the player!”, game developers will work together with researchers from Karlshochschule to design game rules that reflect an economic system respecting social foundations and planetary boundaries. Preceding kick-off workshops will set the stage for the side tracks. Afterward, participants will join the main THE LÄND Global Game Jam for a collaborative jam session.
The THE LÄND Global Game Jam is coordinated by MFG Baden-Württemberg as part of its Games BW initiative, in partnership with Karlshochschule International University, SWR Südwestrundfunk, game Verband Baden-Württemberg, and K³ – dem Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaftsbüro Karlsruhe. The Game Jam is supported by the Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg (Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württemberg).

MORIA SIX wins two prizes at DOK Leipzig 2024
The MFG-funded MORIA SIX by Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg graduate Jennifer Mallmann received two awards at the International Festival for Documentary and Animated Film DOK Leipzig (October 28 to November 3, 2024): the DEFA Förderpreis, endowed with 4,000 euros, and the Filmpreis Leipziger Ring der Stiftung Friedliche Revolution, endowed with 2,500 euros. MORIA SIX was also one of the “DOK Busters 2024”.

In her graduation film MORIA SIX, which celebrated its world premiere in Leipzig with two sold-out screenings, director Jennifer Mallmann takes a differentiated look at the Moria refugee camp, where a devastating fire broke out in September 2020. In calm, precise images, the film addresses the mechanisms of the European policy of isolation, which treats people like criminals and locks them up in futuristic high-security camps.
MORIA SIX is a production of Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and our CREATORS from Film- und Fernsehlabor Ludwigsburg, produced by Matthias Drescher (Film- und Fernsehlabor Ludwigsburg).

In Memoriam: Angela Jedek
It is with great sadness that we learned of Angela Jedek‘s passing. As an animation supervisor and director, she was a true pioneer with heart. As a beloved member of the The M.A.R.K.13™ family, alumna of the Animationsinstitut at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, and a treasured friend and colleague of the Stuttgart animation community, she left a mark that will never fade. As an animator, she contributed her talent to the feature films “I, Robot”, “Maya the Bee Movie”, and “Knight Rusty”, among others.
In a portrait for the Filmakademie, she once shared, “For me, the special thing about my job is when I get to animate characters and manage to give them emotions that make the viewer forget they are animations“. This love for her craft touched and inspired so many.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to her family, her husband, and her children. Our hearts and thoughts are with them, and we wish them much strength during this difficult time.

Who realizes the best in their field in our country? To answer this question, MFG Baden-Württemberg is organizing a new competition: THE CREATIVE LÄND CHÄLLENGE. As part of the new campaign THE CREATIVE LÄND, the MFG is looking for high-quality, value-oriented work from eleven areas of the cultural and creative industries. Full-time creative professionals with their company headquarters or main residence in Baden-Württemberg can take part. Deadline: September 23, 2024.
Under the motto “Share your values – Show your works”, the new competition challenges the creative industries in Baden-Württemberg to showcase their work in a synopsis. Because breathtaking and inspiring things are happening in many areas, but often enough only the industry itself takes note. THE CREATIVE LÄND CHÄLLENGE gives all participants the opportunity to present themselves as part of a powerful cultural and creative sector and thus achieve broader recognition and visibility. This is aimed not only at their own sphere of influence, but also at companies from other sectors that are enthusiastic about new ideas and creative collaborations.
The competition is open to all full-time creative professionals from the following eleven sectors: Architecture, book market, performing arts, design, film, art, music, press, broadcasting, software and games as well as advertising – in other words, everyone, regardless of whether they are freelancers, small offices, agencies or large publishing houses. Professional works that deal with the developments and challenges of the present, for example topics such as regionality, cross-innovation, democracy or sustainability, have the best chances. A high-caliber jury will select the best entries. In addition to an exhibition of the works, there is also a prize of €1,000 and a broad-based social media campaign. The award ceremony and vernissage will take place at an evening event on December 4, 2024.
Not from one of the eleven sectors yourself? Or nothing suitable in your drawer at the moment, but perhaps a hot tip for colleagues? Then you are welcome to draw the attention of all those whose work deserves more visibility to the competition. The social media campaign for the competition also offers the opportunity to share and forward posts.
The MFG offers Zoom consultation hours for interested parties. Here you can find the time slots, the application form and everything else about the competition.
THE CREATIVE LÄND CHÄLLENGE is a competition organized by MFG Baden-Württemberg. Prizes are awarded to works from all eleven sub-sectors that represent the cultural and creative industries in Baden-Württemberg in a high-quality and value-oriented manner. It is part of the “THE CREATIVE LÄND” campaign and is sponsored by the Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Arbeit und Tourismus Baden-Württemberg.

23. NaturVision Filmfestival, July 18-21, 2024

The NaturVision Film Festival Ludwigsburg aims to provide effective impetus for the transformation of our society – from July 18 to 21, 2024, with current nature and environmental films on the big screen, in the cinema and with free admission to the open air. The next generation is particularly important to the NaturVision team. A wide range of films and hands-on activities are aimed at families, children and schools. In addition to environmental education, the main aim is to awaken enthusiasm for nature and show even the youngest children what and how they themselves can contribute to environmental protection.
A recurring theme of the 23rd edition is activism and its many forms. How is it lived? How can it succeed? And where does it reach its limits? This is shown in the differentiated portraits of young climate activists such as the documentaries System Change – A Story of Growing Resistance, Was brennt or Bis hierhin und wie weiter. On the other hand, NaturVision promotes young talent behind the camera with the award for Best Newcomer Film and the presentation of the films on the big screen. The creative potential of tomorrow’s filmmakers is enormous. This is proven by the focus on New Filmmakers with top-class contributions from film students from all over the world, including the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield.
But even beyond the big screen, becoming active is the central theme and the main concern of the festival. Festival director Beatrix Wesle emphasizes: “It was very important to us to encourage more optimism in climate protection with NaturVision – with inspiration instead of frustration, action instead of passivity.” This hands-on approach is reflected in formats such as the „Anders Wirtschaften“ ideas exchange in cooperation with environmental and sustainability start-ups from the region and the “Market of Perspectives” with stands from relevant companies and initiatives, both open air in the Akademiehof.
Our CREATORS from the Film- und Medienfestival gGmbH and the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) are also on board – FMF as co-organizer and ITFS as a partner. On Friday, July 19, at 15.00 CET, in the TRICKSTAR NATURE AWARD program, a selection of outstanding animated short films from the ITFS dealing with nature, animals and the environment will be screened at the open air.

Pre-Fixe with Animation Lounge: KI in der Animationsproduktion
Together with the Film- und Medienfestival gGmbH (organizer of Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film) and the AMCRS, MFG organizes the Pre Fixe with Animation Lounge as a prelude to the monthly network meeting of the film industry (Jour Fixe). Speakers from the animation film scene present practical examples of current projects and provide insights into their work.
On July 8, 18:00 CET, Maximilian Pfisterer, communication designer (FH) / co-owner of our CREATORS from Frischvergiftung will give a presentation on the topic of “KI in der Animationsproduktion” (“AI in animation production”).

Frischvergiftung from Stuttgart is already successfully using imaging AI in its workflows. In projection mappings to completely transform existing buildings, to create visuals for music festivals or in collaboration with Andreas Hykade to generate morphings between given artworks. On July 8, the studio will provide some insights and give some keywords to get started yourself.
Maximilian Pfisterer radicalized himself as a VJ with his friend and partner Willy Löbl in the Stuttgart club scene and shortly afterwards switched from print to film. That was a while ago and Frischvergiftung has since become a flourishing animation studio.
The Jour Fixe offers a unique opportunity for exchange and networking with colleagues from the MFG Film Funding Unit. All participants are cordially invited to attend the subsequent Jour Fixe from 19:00 CET.
The event will take place at the Kulturzentrum Merlin, Augustenstraße 72, 70178 Stuttgart. Admission is free.

Goldener Spatz for Fritzi & Sophie!
At the 32nd German Children’s Media Festival Goldener Spatz, the episode “Eine Reise, die alles verändert“ (A journey that changes everything’) from the eight-part TV series “Fritzi & Sophie – Eine grenzenlose Freundschaft” won the Goldener Spatz in the “Series Animation” category! Like the “Fritzi” feature film, the series about two friends who experience the politically turbulent time of the fall of communism in 1989 is based on the children’s book “Fritzi war dabei” by Hanna Schott and celebrated its world premiere at the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) at the end of April.

The ARD co-production “Fritzi and Sophie” is produced under the auspices of MDR together with WDR and SWR by Balance Film in Leipzig, Trickstudio Lutterbeck in Cologne and our CREATORS from Studio Film Bilder (producer: Thomas Meyer-Hermann) and was co-funded by MFG. It was directed by Matthias Bruhn, Ralf Kukula and Thomas Meyer-Hermann. After the broadcast on KiKA from October 3, 2024, all episodes will also be available in the ARD Mediathek, on kika.de and in the KiKA player.
The children’s jury’s statement:
“We liked the episode “Eine Reise, die alles verändert“ and therefore deserved a ‘Goldener Spatz’, as it takes up the important topic of divided Germany and implements it beautifully and comprehensibly. The story was told in a captivating and exciting as well as informative and emotional way. The fact that the episode remained exciting throughout meant that you were always on the edge of your seat. Thanks to the bright, but not too bright colors and the beautiful animations, the series is suitable for many different age groups.”

„Chancen und Herausforderungen von Analogfilm im LED-Volume“ (Opportunities and challenges of analog film in the LED volume)
Samuel Ramm, Sebastian Burk and Luis Zappe studied Audiovisual Media at the Hochschule der Medien Stuttgart.
The project “What you can’t see” was created as part of their bachelor’s theses, which dealt with innovations in LED virtual production. Its premise was to prove that shooting on analogue film material in an LED volume is possible, despite widespread skepticism, and to uncover the associated effects on the workflow in the LED volume as well as colors and moiré, In addition, an AI model for background separation was developed to simplify post-production. Together with Hyperbowl, Studio L’Equipe, Arri Rental Munich, Oh, Boy! Films and Silbersalz, they carried out a series of tests and tested theoretical findings onset for practical suitability.
„3D Gaussian Splatting für LED Wall Production?“
Luca Malz dealt with the topic of 3D reconstruction of photos in his bachelor’s thesis. The innovative “3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS)” approach is based on machine learning and opens up promising prospects in the media industry thanks to its photorealistic 3D reconstructions. In “3D Gaussian Splatting for Virtual Production”, Luca Malz compares the results of photogrammetric scans and 3DGS and refers to the integration into an LED wall virtual production workflow.
„Lens Flare Capture“
Vincent Maurer studies Technical Directing at Animationsinstitut and presents his scientific research project on the subject of lens flares. How does a flare actually occur in the lens and how can it be realistically reconstructed? Using motion control, image processing and machine learning, Vincent is trying to find new ways to generate realistic lens flares.

FFL nominated for the CINEURO Award 2024!
At the traditional “Meet & Greet” of the CinEuro partners at the 77th International Film Festival in Cannes, it was announced which film projects have been nominated for the CinEuro Award. Among them are our CREATORS from FFL Film- und Fernsehlabor in Ludwigsburg, who are hoping to win the award for their planned feature film project “Schweizer Kühe“!

About the project:
SCHWEIZER KÜHE | LES VACHES SUISSES
Production: FFL Film- und Fernseh-Labor (DE), Co-Production: Tellfilm (CH), Director: Matthias Dinter / Screenplay: Ulrike Maria Hund & Matthias Dinter
Southern Germany 1945: When the small village of Hemmingen is occupied by French troops, 10-year-old Paul devises an adventurous plan to save the village’s cows from being confiscated by the Muslim soldiers of African descent. In the process, he befriends the officer Aziz – who, however, falls in love with Paul’s mother Martha…
The CinEuro Award is a cross-border initiative that was launched last year by various CinEuro partners. In addition to MFG Filmförderung, the initiators are the northern French Région Grand Est, Film Fund Luxembourg, Saarland Medien GmbH, the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry for Family Affairs, Women, Culture and Integration, Wallimage, screen.brussels, Wallonie-Bruxelles International, the Ministry of the German-speaking Community of Belgium and, for the first time, the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg. The aim is to support the creation of projects that highlight the links between several partner regions through specific themes, characters or places.
The finalists selected from the submissions, i.e. the respective screenwriters, producers and directors, will present their projects to the jury and other accredited participants on July 3 at the international co-production meeting Forum Alentours in Strasbourg (July 2 to 4). On the same day, the international jury of experts will select the winners, whose names will be announced at the subsequent reception at ARTE.
We keep our fingers crossed for all nominees!

German Computer Game Award 2024 for THE BEAR!

The interactive bedtime story THE BEAR – A STORY FROM THE WORLD OF GRA has won the German Computer Game Award (DCP) in the category “Best Graphic Design”. THE BEAR is the debut work of Clara Deitmar, Julius Dorsel and Luzie Kehle – all former students of the Animationsinstitut at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. The team accepted the award yesterday evening in Munich.
THE BEAR is an interactive experience for tablets. Two friends, the bear and the little one, embark on a journey through a dreamy universe where they collect stars and experience stories together. THE BEAR is about rediscovering the intimate and emotional state just before falling asleep.
Winning the DCP feels like a dream for the team: “It was absolutely amazing to be part of the DCP this year! The nominations alone meant so much to us – winning is just phenomenal. We couldn’t have wished for a better start for our newly founded studio.”
The German Computer Game Award is the most important prize for games in Germany and is endowed with around 800,000€. It is awarded by the Federal Government, represented by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, together with game – Association of the German Games Industry and the Digital Games Culture Foundation.
For Jan Pinkava, Director of the Animationsinstitut, the triumph at the DCP is a strong signal for Ludwigsburg as a games location: “To put it simply: The Filmakademie is in Ludwigsburg, and Ludwigsburg is a growing centre for the creative arts. Our Interactive Media teaching is about content – what the artwork does and what it means – with a special emphasis on storytelling. That is why our talented students produce meaningful work, like THE BEAR. At the Animationsinstitut we are proud of our extraordinary students and their contribution to the region.“
THE BEAR is part of the WORLD OF GRA story world, a universe initiated by the creators at the Animationsinstitut. A very special milestone here was that the team created the visuals and trailers for Stuttgart Animated Week 2024 (consisting of: FMX – Film and Media Exchange, Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film and Animation Production Days).
While still studying Interactive Media, Deitmar, Dorsel and Kehle founded the studio Mucks! Games, under whose name they recently published THE BEAR. The game is available for iOS systems.

SWR TV documentary about current animation projects involving our Creators

The German TV documentary “Frame by Frame – Wie Trickfilmer ticken” by SWR provides insights into the creation of the animated series “Fritzi & Sophie – A Boundless Friendship” and the animated feature film “The Light of Aisha”.
“Fritzi & Sophie” is a co-production of Balance Film Dresden, Trickstudio Lutterbeck Cologne and our CREATORS from Studio Filmbilder in Stuttgart and the first animation series to be produced entirely in Germany. Director and producer Thomas Meyer-Hermann (Studio Filmbilder), director and producer Ralf Kukula (Balance Film) and others involved in the production process will talk about the new technique in animated film of using motion capture in combination with CGI.
Exciting insights into the series and its creation will also be available in a few weeks at the Stuttgart Animated Week at FMX and ITFS. It will also celebrate its world premiere at ITFS (episodes 1-4, episodes 5-8).
Shadi Adib, director of the feature film “The Light of Aisha” and alumna of Animationsinstitut, talks about the making of the international co-production, whose screenplay by Xavier Romero and Llorenç Español won the German Animation Screenplay Award at ITFS 2019 and which is due to be released in cinemas in the fall. Further insights are provided by Kate Forsdick and Holger Tesch from The M.A.R.K. 13 Group in Stuttgart and Peter Keydel from Mago Production in Barcelona.
Take a look!
Directly to feature in the ARD media library, it is available until April 1, 2025.

Night of Shame on April 26, 2024!

Night of Shame is the curated film show that celebrates filmmakers’ worst! From charmingly incompetent to all out shameful – established directors excavate their questionable films and submit them to the fascinated gaze of a live audience. An introduction, a screening and an on-stage interview with our host Michael Bohnenstingl. Slightly uncomfortable or outrageously funny! Finally our filmmaker is rewarded by the redemptive applause of a loving crowd. Night of Shame makes you feel humbled, elated, and a bit closer to each other. Because ultimately: “We’re all the same in our shame.”
Be there on Friday, April 26, 2024, at 20.00 CET – during Stuttgart Animated Week (aka ITFS (April 23-28, 2024), FMX (April 23-26, 2024) and APD (April 23-25, 2024)) – when it gets really embarrassing again, but also incredibly funny!
Location: Contain’t, Container City Kunstverein Wagenhalle, Nordbahnhofstraße 1, 70191 Stuttgart
Get your tickets as soon as possible, as experience shows that the show is booked up pretty quickly!
Further information on the Night of Shame website and Instagram
The Night of Shame has already taken place at Animationsinstitut, at the Kaboom Festival in Amsterdam and twice during the Stuttgart Animated Week. Pre Fixe with Animation Lounge: Die auditive Ebene im Animationsfilm
Together with the Film- und Medienfestival gGmbH (organizer of Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film) and the AMCRS, MFG organizes the Pre Fixe with Animation Lounge as a prelude to the monthly network meeting of the film industry (Jour Fixe), at which speakers from the animation film scene report on current projects using practical examples and provide insights into their work.
On Monday, March 11, 2024 at 18:00 CET, Foley artist and sound designer Luis Schöffend will talk about “Die auditive Ebene im Animationsfilm” (The auditory level in animated film).
In animated films, sound design plays a crucial role as there’s no traditional original sound like in game or documentary films. Foley artist and sound designer Luis Schöffend provides insight into organizational, creative, and technical aspects relevant to sound design in animated films. The presentation is aimed at all professionals in the animation film industry, as well as interested listeners from other fields. Through various film examples, it becomes apparent how handcrafted sounds and creative sound designs breathe life into animated images. And just as diverse as each film is, so too is the consideration for sound design.

Luis Schöffend works as a sound effects artist on animated, dramatic, and documentary films, games, radio plays, theater, and performances. As a sound designer, his work is predominantly heard in animated films and series, as well as in experimental formats. The films and their sound design in which Luis has been involved have been recognized multiple times, including winning the German Film Award (“Lola, Best Sound Design”) and at the Filmfest Dresden (“Goldener Reiter, Filmton”).
The event will take place at the Kulturzentrum Merlin, Augustenstraße 72, 70178 Stuttgart. Admission is free.

Diploma Project WORLD OF GRA Creates Visuals for FMX, ITFS and APD
Source: Press Release Animationsinstitut, Ludwigsburg, January 23, 2024

Stills World of Gra, Credits: World of Gra von Mucks! Games, Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg
The development of story worlds at the Animationsinstitut has yet another success story: the 2023 diploma project WORLD OF GRA is the face of three leading animated media events in Europe. The conference FMX – Film & Media Exchange (April 23-26, 2024), the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) (April 23-28, 2024) and the Animation Production Days (APD) (April 23-25, 2024) all chose WORLD OF GRA as their motif for the just released event trailers and visual designs.
For the very first time, custom trailers for each event have been created – each with its own story, focus and theme – by the same authors, from the same narrative universe, illustrating the harmonious spirit of synergy between the three events of “Stuttgart’s Animated Week.” Dr. Jan Pinkava, Director of the Animationsinstitut, welcomes the choice of WORLD OF GRA and sees it as a significant win-win situation: “I am delighted that our talented alumni have created such a beautifully resonant and meaningful collection of graphics and trailers for this year’s FMX, ITFS, and APDs. This is the best of all worlds for the three events, for our graduates, for the Animationsinstitut, and for Stuttgart’s ‘Animated Week’. Congratulations.”
WORLD OF GRA is a universe of many different stories that share one overarching theme: growth. The beings of the WORLD OF GRA all have one big problem. They grow and grow and just won`t stop growing. Clara Deitmar, the creator of WORLD OF GRA, believes that this theme is a universal human experience – life means change, growth, moving on.
Mirroring the IP itself, all of them have grown personally and artistically throughout the creation process and their Interactive Media studies at the Animationsinstitut. The production of the visuals and trailers for FMX, ITFS and APD 2024 marks a special milestone, as the producer Julius Dorsel explains: “It’s a badge of honour to be selected to provide the trailers for all three events! A bit intimidating and just wonderful that so many people are going to see our characters on the big screens.”

“The Last Bar” Best Animated Film at Filmschau BW 2023!

“The Last Bar” was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Film Prize for the Best Animated Film at the Filmschau Baden-Württemberg 2023. The stop-motion film was created as a graduation project by the team around director Arne Hain – including Svenja Weber, Theresa Worm, Torben Hensel and Louis Wick – at the Animationsinstitut of the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg.
The jury (producer Sven Bergmann, director and author Sveta Yuferova and Matthias Bäuerle) gave the following reasons for their choice: “Unflinchingly cleverly animated, obsessed with detail in every aspect of design and almost suicidally produced – considering the insane amount of work involved in stop-motion films, the filmmakers* around Arne Hein, Svenja Weber, Theresa Worm, Torben Hensel and Louis Wick present us with a cinematically visually stunning and dramaturgically highly unusual and powerful debut work. On the big screen, ‘The Last Bar’ draws us deep into an existentialist merry-go-round with mysterious but also loving characters. The result is great, impetuous and impressive cinematic passion. This is Sturm und Drang. This is dreaming with open eyes. More of this, please. Much more.”
Congratulations from the bottom of our hearts!

“Little Fan” on the List of Oscar 2024 Qualifying Animated Shorts

One of the animated short films that can hope to win an Oscar in 2024 is “Little Fan”. The film, created by director Sveta Yuferova, co-director Shad Lee Bradbury, producer Paul Maresch, and their team, tells the story of a little fan whose journey takes a surprising turn when he comes across a mysterious object.
Sveta Yuferova and Paul Maresch both graduated from Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg‘s Animationsinstitut in 2015, Yuferova in animation and Maresch as animation/effects producer. Yuferova has recently started working as a lecturer at the Cologne Game Lab, in addition to her ongoing work as a director and animator. Maresch’s graduation films won various film awards, among others the film “CHILD” was nominated for the Student Oscar. Afterwards he realized his first commissioned production for Disney XD Channel and participated in the animated feature film „Manou the Swift“.
“Little Fan” has already screened at festivals worldwide and won the award in the “Best Production For Young Children” category at the Chicago International Children Film Festival.
The Oscar shortlist voting begins on December 14, 2023, and the shortlist of 15 films will be announced on December 21. We are keeping our fingers crossed!

Pre Fixe with Animation Lounge: Animating Pumuckl
Together with the Film- und Medienfestival gGmbH (organizer of Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film) and the AMCRS, MFG organizes the Pre Fixe with Animation Lounge as a prelude to the monthly network meeting of the film industry (Jour Fixe), at which speakers from the animation film scene report on current projects using practical examples and provide insights into their work.
“Revealing the invisible: Animating Pumuckl“ will be the topic on December 11, 2023 at 18:00 CET.
The Pumuckl series brought the radio play character of the goblin to television for the first time in the 1980s. The magic of the series was created in particular by the interplay between the actor Gustl Bayrhammer and the wild, lovable cartoon character of Pumuckl. This adaptation of Ellis Kaut’s books is still very much present in reruns and in the nostalgic memories of the current generation of parents and grandparents. For the new edition of the series by director Marcus H. Rosenmüller, Ludwigsburg-based Studio Soi was commissioned to provide the new animations for the title character. With such a new edition, the question arises as to what should be changed in a contemporary realization. How close do the animators stay to the original? What technology and look could the new Pumuckl use to inspire children again?

Michael Hockey, Animation Supervisor, and Torben Meier, co-founder of Studio Soi, will give an insight into these decisions and the working methods of the animation studio. The presentation will be held in English.
The event will take place at the Kulturzentrum Merlin, Augustenstraße 72, 70178 Stuttgart. Admission is free.

Annegret Richter new Artistic Director of Film- und Medienfestival gGmbH!

Press Release, November 30, 2023
Complete Press Release and CV Annegret Richter
In June of this year, Heike Mozer took over the commercial management, and now the artistic position of the Film- und Medienfestival gGmbH (FMF) has also been filled: Annegret Richter, an experienced curator and festival organiser who has known and accompanied the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) for years, is taking over.
Heike Mozer and Annegret Richter would like to lead the ITFS into the future and to re-establish it as an annual highlight in the festival calendar for the German and international animated film industry. “We complement each other in different areas and have a very similar view of things when it comes to fundamental issues. It is important to us to create places for encounters, as well as to connect filmmakers, the industry, and the audience. With Annegret, I now have a creative partner by my side,” emphasises Heike Mozer. Together, the managing directors want to further develop the ITFS and intensify the synergies with FMX and the APDs.
“It is a great opportunity and honour for me to work with Heike Mozer and the FMF team to develop the festival for the future,” says the experienced curator Annegret Richter, whose expertise is also highly valued at the ITFS. Her many years of networking in industry and networking projects make her an experienced, interested and passionate advocate for animated film. In her new role, she wants to work to strengthen animation: “Animation tells the important stories and issues of our time. In my opinion, animation for adults does not yet receive enough visibility. That’s why I think the festival also has a task for society as a whole to bring audiences into contact with the films and the filmmakers. Especially people who perhaps didn’t even know that animated film was relevant to them.“
Annegret Richter worked as festival director at the short film festival “Filmfest Dresden”, was head of the animated film section at DOK Leipzig and has been managing director of AG Animationsfilm since 2016. She also regularly curates film programmes and has been a member of festival juries and selection committees. She is also familiar with current developments and discourses through teaching assignments and her work as a lecturer.

DOK Premiere: Oskar Fischinger – Musik für die Augen

Oskar Fischinger and his wife Elfriede Fischinger are important pioneers for advertising and animated film in Germany. As early as the 1920s, Oskar Fischinger combined abstract shapes and colors with music in short films. Based on an interview with his wife, the documentary by Harald Pulch and Ralf Ott reconstructs the couple’s life’s work. Numerous of their films were digitally restored for this purpose. The Fischingers created experimental masterpieces for the screen, such as the well-known advertising film “Muratti greift ein,” in which cigarettes march to the beat of classical music. Oskar Fischinger is considered one of the pioneers of the digital present and an innovative designer of moving images. His films are the precursors of modern music videos and his influences can still be felt today.
The Haus des Dokumentarfilms presents the DOK premiere of OSKAR FISCHINGER – MUSIK FÜR DIE AUGEN (MUSIC FOR THE EYES) in the presence of the two directors. The curators Goggo Gensch (Stuttgart) and Kay Hoffmann (Ludwigsburg) from the Haus des Dokumentarfilms will lead through the cinema evening and the audience discussion.

SYMBLINGS was initially their semester project as part of “Anifilm/Aniplay”, before they decided to expand the world and the story further and develop a 2D Metroidvania game. The game is about a contaminated and doomed world, where plants and mushrooms are separated by a bitter enmity. In the midst of this conflict, the Symbling, a symbiosis of a chestnut and a mushroom, tries to reunite the two hostile worlds in order to save the world.
With SYMBLINGS the team set the cornerstone of their company, which they have now founded parallel to their studies.
