Naked Web – exhibition by Students of the Merz Akademie

“Baroque“ by Merz Akademie student Vanessa Schmidt

In the dawn of the World Wide Web – before the separation of content and style, before CSS, in the age of pure HTML – webmasters worked with only a handful of <tags> to shape their pages.

Creating layouts, visuals and functionality was a challenge, yet not impossible. With the humble < table >, the elegant < hr >, the interactive < input type=“radio” > and < input type=“checkbox” >, and of course the legendary clear.gif, every trick became an act of invention. Even border=“0” or border=“100” carried a message.

The works in this exhibition by students of the Merz Akademie, curated by Olia Lialina, are built from these same elements – to make them shine once more, and never be forgotten.

Image: Kulturaggregat, Overtoon

Our HEROES from Overtoon are having an exhibition! Join their Vernissage on Friday, November 17, at 18:00 CET, with DJs Burnie + Turnie (Urban Record Store Residents). The exhibition runs from November 18 to December 22, 2023 at Kulturaggregat e.V. in Freiburg. Admission is free.

About the exhibition:
Since 2020, the animation studio OVERTOON, founded by Martin Fischer and Nico Dörle, has specialized in the production of animated music videos and can now look back on a portfolio of over 20 videos for artists such as SEEED, Megaloh, Papa Roach, Marteria, Moses P. and others.

Stylistically, the work of the Freiburg-based studio is characterized by a mix of comic-like illustrated design worlds, exaggerated cartoons and abstract visuals.

The exhibition ANIMATED MUSIC VIDEOS provides an insight into the creative and conceptual work of the collective. In addition to the final videos, there are a number of “in-progress” projects in the form of animated storyboards, concept drawings, character and prop designs, scripts and more.

Location: Kulturaggregat e.V., Hildastr. 5, 79102 Freiburg
