Now online – TechTalks Presentations from October 22!
The TechTalks Stuttgart event series presents technical topics from the fields of visual effects (VFX) and animation for scientists, creative professionals, students and the interested public. After the keynote speeches, people can spontaneously take to the microphone on their own behalf. At the recent TechTalks on October 22, 2024, the Research & Development department of Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg’s Animationsinstitut presented two of their current projects: EMIL-XR and MAX-R in Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg’s Albrecht Ade Studio.
You can now watch the two presentations of that evening online!
EMIL-XR: Volker Helzle and Andreas Dahn introduced the European Media & Immersion Lab, featuring the R&D’s Lighthouse project FATE OF THE MINOTAUR – an immersive VR-journey designed for up to four players. EMIL – European Media and Immersion Lab (emil-xr.eu)
MAX-R Project: Simon Spielmann and Jonas Trottnow shared advancements in the Mixed Augmented and Extended Reality Media Pipeline (MAX-R), including AI-assisted tools that push high-quality XR content creation to new levels. MAX-R (UPF)
At the hands-on demos, the attendees could test the latest versions of the R&D’s Digital Locations and AnimHost. They also had a chance to step into virtual reality for an unforgettable encounter – coming face-to-face with the Minotaur.

„EMIL“ | Research & Development, Animationsinstitut, Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg The EU-funded project EMIL (European Media and Immersion Lab) aims to promote innovations and developments in cutting-edge XR technologies, as well as strengthen relationships between the creative industries and potential innovation partners across Europe. The staff of the Research & Development department at the Animationsinstitut will provide insights into the international network, the status of the diverse, funded projects after the first two years, and present their lighthouse project “FATE OF THE MINOTAUR”, a VR adventure for up to four players, which can be tested on-site afterward. EMIL – European Media and Immersion Lab (emil-xr.eu)
„MAX-R“ | Research & Development, Animationsinstitut, Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg The MAX-R project (Mixed Augmented and Extended Reality Media Pipeline) is a 30-month HORIZON EUROPE initiative. Eleven project partners from across Europe are developing tools for the creation and processing of high-quality XR content, based on real-time workflows. The Animationsinstitut contributes to the project with innovations such as “DIGITAL LOCATIONS,” a demonstrator of virtual replicas of real filming locations for virtual productions, and “ANIMHOST,” an AI-driven system for real-time animations. In this presentation, the Research & Development team will provide insights into the technologies and key project outcomes. MAX-R (UPF)

Program Schedule:
„Chancen und Herausforderungen von Analogfilm im LED-Volume“(Opportunities and challenges of analog film in the LED volume)
Samuel Ramm, Sebastian Burk and Luis Zappe studied Audiovisual Media at the Hochschule der Medien Stuttgart. The project “What you can’t see” was created as part of their bachelor’s theses, which dealt with innovations in LED virtual production. Its premise was to prove that shooting on analogue film material in an LED volume is possible, despite widespread skepticism, and to uncover the associated effects on the workflow in the LED volume as well as colors and moiré, In addition, an AI model for background separation was developed to simplify post-production. Together with Hyperbowl, Studio L’Equipe, Arri Rental Munich, Oh, Boy! Films and Silbersalz, they carried out a series of tests and tested theoretical findings onset for practical suitability.
„3D Gaussian Splatting für LED Wall Production?“
Luca Malz dealt with the topic of 3D reconstruction of photos in his bachelor’s thesis. The innovative “3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS)” approach is based on machine learning and opens up promising prospects in the media industry thanks to its photorealistic 3D reconstructions. In “3D Gaussian Splatting for Virtual Production”, Luca Malz compares the results of photogrammetric scans and 3DGS and refers to the integration into an LED wall virtual production workflow.
„Lens Flare Capture“
Vincent Maurer studies Technical Directing at Animationsinstitut and presents his scientific research project on the subject of lens flares. How does a flare actually occur in the lens and how can it be realistically reconstructed? Using motion control, image processing and machine learning, Vincent is trying to find new ways to generate realistic lens flares.
